Rooted in the Hills,
Built Around People
Suk Vana began with a simple conviction: that later life, when it is well-supported and set within natural beauty, can be among the most meaningful chapters a person lives.
← Back to HomeFrom a Hillside Dream to a Living Community
Suk Vana — meaning "joyful forest" in Thai — was founded in the hills above Mae Rim by a small group who had watched too many older adults lose vitality not to illness, but to isolation and routine. They believed that community, nature, and purposeful daily life were more powerful supports for wellbeing than almost anything else.
In 2019, after years of careful planning and many conversations with older adults across Thailand and abroad, the first residents moved into what had been a working hillside estate. The gardens were replanted, the walking trails cleared, and the communal kitchen was opened. Within a year, the rhythm of the place had found its own character.
Today Suk Vana is home to residents from Thailand, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and Japan. What they share is a preference for nature, for thoughtful company, and for days that feel worth living — not merely endured.
"Our goal was never to create a facility. It was to create a home that happened to welcome many people."
Our Mission
To create a mountain community where independent older adults live with comfort, dignity, and daily purpose — surrounded by northern Thai nature and warm human connection.
Our Vision
A world where later life is not a diminishment but a deepening — where the years after work bring space for reflection, learning, beauty, and genuine community.
Our Approach
We do not prescribe a way of living. We build a setting where good days are easy to have, and then we stand back and let residents shape their own routines within it.
Our Setting
56 Moo 8, Mae Rim-Samoeng Road — a cooler, greener elevation in the hills north of Chiang Mai, near village temples, local markets, and mountain trails.
Our Core Team
A small, dedicated group drawn to the highlands by the same belief that shaped Suk Vana: that where we live shapes how we live.
Somchai Siriwan
A former landscape architect with over 20 years of experience designing community spaces in northern Thailand. Somchai oversees the grounds, programming, and the overall spirit of Suk Vana.
Natchaya Petcharat
Natchaya leads the personal welcome team and coordinates the activities calendar. She has worked in senior community settings in Thailand and New Zealand and brings warmth and organisation in equal measure.
Kasem Wongkham
Kasem's kitchen is at the heart of Suk Vana's daily rhythm. Trained in both Thai and European cuisine, he sources ingredients from local highland farms and adapts menus to seasonal availability and resident preferences.
Standards That Shape Daily Life
A mountain community runs on trust. The standards below are not policies on paper — they are habits built into the daily operation of Suk Vana.
Resident Privacy & Dignity
All resident information is handled with complete discretion. Staff are trained in dignified communication, and residents are treated as adults whose autonomy is central.
Food Safety & Nutritional Quality
The kitchen follows Thai FDA food safety standards. Meals are prepared fresh daily with locally sourced ingredients. Dietary requirements and preferences are accommodated on request.
Premises Safety & Maintenance
All residential buildings and trails are inspected monthly. Fire safety equipment is maintained to Thai Civil Engineering Standards. Emergency response procedures are rehearsed with all staff quarterly.
Community Conduct Standards
Suk Vana is a respectful, inclusive community. Guidelines around shared spaces and social interaction are agreed upon openly with all residents and reviewed annually.
Personal Data Protection
Resident and enquirer data is managed in accordance with Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). Data is never shared with third parties without explicit consent.
Environmental Stewardship
The grounds are maintained without chemical pesticides. We operate composting, rainwater collection, and a resident-run kitchen garden as part of daily community life and environmental care.
Highland Senior Living in Northern Thailand
Mae Rim is among the most quietly beautiful districts in northern Thailand — a landscape of forested hills, agricultural valleys, and working villages that has drawn thoughtful visitors for generations. Suk Vana occupies a hillside position within this landscape, offering a living environment shaped by the natural rhythms of the highlands: cooler mornings, forest air, birdsong, and seasonal change.
Senior living in Thailand, particularly outside the medical model, is a growing area of interest among both Thai families and older adults from abroad who are drawn to the country's warmth, culture, and quality of life at a considered cost of living. Suk Vana addresses this interest with a non-institutional model built on genuine hospitality and community engagement.
Residents at Suk Vana are independent adults who choose to live in community not because they must, but because they find it richer and more sustaining than isolated living. The community includes individuals who have lived in Thailand for decades, as well as those arriving for the first time — drawn by the landscape, the culture, and the reputation of the Chiang Mai highlands as a place where life moves at a human pace.
